From COVID App to India’s Digital Health Gateway
Most people in India know Aarogya Setu as the app they used during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, it has a very different role.
In June 2026, the Government of India launched Aarogya Setu 2.0 as a citizen-facing digital health application connected to the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). It is designed to bring multiple health services together while giving individuals greater access to their digital health information.
From one purpose to an entire health ecosystem
Aarogya Setu 2.0 allows users to create and manage their ABHA, access linked health records, discover healthcare facilities and doctors, book appointments and access other ABDM-enabled services. It also includes features for managing health information and consent.
The important point isn’t the number of features. It is the direction in which healthcare is moving.
Digital health is becoming part of everyday healthcare — not a separate technology initiative.
Why does this matter?
Think about how healthcare information is traditionally spread across different hospitals, laboratories, prescriptions and paper records. A connected digital ecosystem aims to make that information easier to access, link and share when appropriate.
Aarogya Setu 2.0 is intended to make this ecosystem more accessible to citizens, while ABDM provides the underlying digital infrastructure. And as health information becomes more connected, privacy and consent become equally important.
The platform includes mechanisms that allow users to manage requests for sharing their health information, reflecting the growing importance of responsible health-data use.
Why should a healthcare student care?
Because the healthcare workplace you enter is changing along with the healthcare system. As digital health expands, healthcare professionals are increasingly likely to work alongside:
Digital health records • Interoperable systems • Digital documentation • Health information exchange • AI-enabled tools • Digital healthcare services.
You don’t need to become a technology specialist.
But understanding how healthcare and technology are coming together can become an important part of being prepared for the modern healthcare workplace.
The bigger picture
- ABDM is building India’s digital health infrastructure.
- Aarogya Setu 2.0 is helping bring that infrastructure closer to the citizen.
Together, they represent a broader shift: Healthcare is becoming more connected, digital and data-driven.
For today’s healthcare students, the takeaway is simple: The healthcare system you enter tomorrow may look very different from the one you studied for today.
And understanding that change is part of being ready for it.
