How Technology Is Changing the Future of Healthcare Work

Artificial Intelligence is no longer something that belongs only to technology companies.

It is increasingly becoming part of healthcare — from diagnostics and clinical decision support to healthcare operations, research and health-system planning. India is now also putting frameworks around how AI should be used in healthcare, not just how quickly it can be adopted.

AI is moving from possibility to practice

In February 2026, the Government of India launched two important initiatives: SAHI — Strategy for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare for India — and BODH, the Benchmarking Open Data Platform for Health AI.

SAHI provides national guidance for the safe, ethical, evidence-based and inclusive adoption of AI across healthcare. BODH provides a structured environment for testing and benchmarking AI solutions before they are deployed at scale.

This is significant because it shows that India’s AI conversation is moving beyond experimentation towards responsible implementation.

So, will AI replace healthcare professionals?

That may be the wrong question. The more useful question is: “How will healthcare professionals work differently as AI becomes part of their environment?”

AI can help analyse information, identify patterns, support decisions and automate certain repetitive tasks. But healthcare involves much more than processing information. It involves clinical judgement, communication, patient interaction, ethics and accountability. AI may change how some tasks are performed without removing the need for people who understand the healthcare context and can interpret and apply information appropriately.

The skills around healthcare are changing

A healthcare professional of the future may increasingly work alongside AI-enabled tools.

That doesn’t mean every nurse, physiotherapist, pharmacist or allied-health professional needs to become an AI developer. But understanding the basics will become increasingly useful:

  • What can AI do?
  • What are its limitations?
  • How should its outputs be interpreted?
  • How should patient data be protected?
  • Where does human judgement remain essential?

These are becoming healthcare questions, not just technology questions.

Responsible AI matters as much as AI itself

Healthcare data is sensitive, and AI systems need to be evaluated for safety, reliability, bias and performance before being used at scale.

That is precisely why BODH focuses on benchmarking AI models against diverse, real-world health datasets, while SAHI emphasises governance, data stewardship, validation, deployment and monitoring.

India’s approach is therefore not simply: “How do we use more AI?”

It is increasingly: “How do we use AI safely and effectively in healthcare?”

Why should a healthcare student care?

Because the healthcare workplace you enter may use AI differently from the healthcare workplace that exists today.

You may encounter AI in:

Clinical and diagnostic support • Documentation and information management • Healthcare analytics • Research • Patient-facing digital services

You don’t need to predict which technology will dominate. You need to understand how technology is changing healthcare work — and be ready to learn alongside it.

The bigger picture

Digital health is changing how healthcare information moves. AI is beginning to change what can be done with that information. The healthcare professionals of tomorrow will increasingly work at the intersection of healthcare knowledge, technology, data and human judgement.
